TVNZ and Stuff in Joint venture Online video news service starts today

A new alliance between TVNZ and Stuff means the two are competing together against NZME. The new online video news service starts on Stuff today (Thursday). The joint venture is said to combine TVNZ video production experience with Stuff’s online distribution network. NZME launched a video news venture recently called Focus recently and NZME has also established WatchMe which includes comedy shows.

NZME has worked with TVNZ and I wondered if Focus had changed the dynamic of their relation ship. NZME is starting to move into TVNZ’s turf.  But the link between the two companies is strong. It includes both commercial links combined use of talent. TVNZ SevenSharp hosts Mike Hosking and Toni Street work for NewstalkZB and The Hits respectively.

The venture was announced by Scoop this week

Fairfax managing director Simon Tong said “This is a significant step for Stuff, and demonstrates our capability as a home for content from other publishers and partners, as well as our own. TVNZ chief executive Kevin Kenrick said:”Our partnership with One News adds to our already strong video capability and reflects the insatiable appetite from our audience for video content. Kenrick said domestic media companies must work together to compete with global players.

  1. Hi John,

    Congrats on the new site.

I suspect TVNZ had approached both Fairfax and NZME, looking for the most advantageous partnership. Like you, I’m a little surprised that went with Fairfax given the strong commercial links with NZME, but there is nothing stopping NZME from jumping aboard later.
